informational things i want to create
A set of tutorials on general programming, organized by complexity and/or subject area (e.g. beginning programming, objects, algorithms, etc.)
General health tips and guides to getting healthier
Good set of resources for recovering from exercise-related injuries
Of course, with a helpless little ape baby on the way and a house to fix up, this will have to go into the hobby bin.

Mother Jones magazine on Tumblr: MLK: "America,... →
motherjones:
In Memphis, March 18, 1968, a few weeks before he was killed in that city:
…And I come by here to say that America, too, is going to Hell, if we don’t use her wealth. If America does not use her vast resources of wealth to end poverty, to make it possible for all of God’s children to have the basic necessities of life, she too will go to Hell. I will hear America through her...

things i've been making
I think I’m a little scared to do start any real home improvement project myself. So I’ve been baking more. Asma doesn’t seem to mind:
bagels (a native New Yorker loves them, so I might be opening up a bagel shop this year)
brownies
cookies
Things I want to branch out to:
breads (gluten-free and gluten)
cakes (?)
more cookies
more brownies

Fact-Checking Drake: Does Toronto Really Love Him?... →
npr:
The rapper Drake has, if you go by one of his song’s lyrics, a short list of interests. The first is money. The second is the city of Toronto. In the world of hip-hop, it’s not outlandish to identify the acquisition of wealth as a motivator, nor is it particularly odd to claim mythical status in one’s hometown. At the ripe old age of 25, Drake estimates his worth to be about $25...

01 The name of the line is Kanye West not DW… The Dw was a design element placed on the invite in homage to my mom : )
I really appreciate the fake DW twitter page but since...

christopher hitchens is dead, and i am glad
A warmongering xenophobe that vehemently opposed religion died a greasy, fat, sickly imperialist. What’s the point of being a loud atheist (antitheist, whatever) when you replace one set of simple truths and lies with another?
Good riddance.

Abominable/A Bomb In a Bird
shitmystudentswrite:
Imagine a peacock gliding on a frozen lake. This is society. Now imagine that peacock swallows a bottle of nitroglycerin, this represents the effect of Darwinian evolution on society. …Genetic research may prove to be abominable, or like eugenics in society, a bomb in a bird.

new york-style bagels →
This recipe is a good starting point. There’s a lot of practice involved, though: I’ve made notes along the way in bold.
Dough
1 1/2 cup warm water (110 to 115 degrees F)
1 tablespoon dry active yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 teaspoons malt syrup
2 teaspoons salt
4 1/2 cups unbleached bread flour (more if needed)
Kettle Water
6 quarts water

caring can be a privilege
I think it’s a privilege to take care of another individual, especially if the individual is of another species.
In Papaya, I see someone who’s excited to be around me and Asma, who loves her Chube and cilantro (and Bean, her partner), who lives life as best she can despite having limited use of her back legs (and a continuous level of discomfort/pain) after a sudden sickness.
Her...

walking
I love walking fast more than running. I always feel accomplished doing 6 or more miles. I’m averaging nearly 3 miles/day this month, but I’m aiming for 5 miles or more as a daily ritual.
A bit silly. But I always feel stronger from it.
Walk! It’s fun.

things people say to pregnant women
Guess which ones are real:
Do you know the gender?
Who wouldn’t want to know? I’d need to know who’s inside me.
Can you tell his/her skin color yet?
Don’t sleep with your baby: she’ll grow up to ride the short bus.
Don’t sleep with your baby: she won’t grow big.
Why would you want to breast-feed? Formula is so much better.
I heard that natural birth...

when politics and racism burst their pimple
I wholeheartedly admit that I get caught in futile spirals of conflict, whether it’s with [semi-]anonymous people on the internet or documenting things for myself. I shouldn’t do it, I know. There’s almost never a productive debate/argument with anyone who flat out denies or dismisses any sort of historical evidence that contradicts their world view (neoliberals being a prime...

empirical analysis of transnational corporation... →
49 of the top 50 transnational corporations are financial institutions, and control a majority of the world’s wealth. (I really want to get my hands on the dataset and do some of my own investigation.) If that seems impossible, use my post on money distribution as a guide. Do some thought exercises and read history.
Money is meant to create itself the more you let it..

modern slavery in america →
Slavery is abhorrent. Vile. Evil.
The numbers in this story pale in comparison to Saudi Arabia’s numbers, but it’s still slavery. This can’t keep happening.
I hate seeing farmers cry.

Listen, you’re the best and the brightest? Harvard, Yale, Brown, Cornell, this what we put out? Should’ve went to Norfolk State, bastards. You would’ve got the same education, you would’ve spent a whole lot less money. Simple fucks.

tumblr keeps getting annoying
There are a lot of bugs that are irritating me about tumblr:
The mobile app keeps crashing when I try to edit.
The mobile site doesn’t save updates (at least to the tags field).
The notes count/list isn’t accurate.
The ‘read more’ functionality stopped working about a month ago. Apparently this is an issue with Chrome (Firefox works).
So, the first two are actually...

yoga's cultural transportation vessel →
If you’re annoyed that your local gas station is now a yoga studio, you might blame Vivekananda for having introduced “yoga” into the national conversation — though an exercise cult with expensive accessories was hardly what he had in mind.
Aside: I was reading up a little on Vivekananda a couple of weeks ago because I was searching for Bengali/Hindu architecture and saw him and a bunch of...

who and what are we working for?
I’m thankful each day that I have a solid, flexible job that matches up with one of my passions. It’s not at all permanent (I’m a subcontractor), but my knowledge and skills are in demand within a small but very wealthy sector. At the same time, I hate that. My family’s livelihood is supported fundamentally by the dynamics that I don’t agree with.
It’s always...

on my 31st
I am thankful for Asma and my babies, my brother, my parents, and friends & family at large. And for nice people.
And rather than descend into something cynical about the artificial importance of birthdays in society, I’ll leave with this: here’s to all life, and the autonomy that once was.

a home of our own (almost)
We are in the final stages of closing on a home in Berkeley, in the lovely San Pablo Park neighborhood. Disclaimer: contents of neighborhood may not appear suitable to wealthy people.
The process has been long and frustrating. We first started looking in the middle of March of this year, and we put in an offer on one of the first houses we ever looked at (last one on the list of five). It was a...
